"The Mother City never stops surprising us..."

The Surfer Who Teaches Township Kids to Ride Waves

❤️ The Surfer Who Teaches Township Kids to Ride Waves

Dale Stevens has spent twenty years riding the waves at Muizenberg. But five years ago, he realized something: the ocean he loved was right next to communities where most kids had never seen the sea up close.

So he started Waves for Change. Every Saturday, a minibus picks up twenty kids from Khayelitsha and brings them to the beach. They learn to surf, yes, but they also learn about ocean safety, environmental care, and their own courage.

Why It Matters: Over 200 kids have gone through the program. Several are now competitive surfers. But Dale says the real win is watching a child who's never seen the ocean stand up on a board for the first time. "That look in their eyes," he says, "that's everything."

The Seafood Spot Locals Don't Want Tourists to Find

🍽️ The Seafood Spot Locals Don't Want Tourists to Find

Harbour House in Kalk Bay has the views. The Test Kitchen has the awards. But ask any Cape Town local where they actually go for seafood, and they'll whisper one name: Fish Hoek Fisheries.

This unassuming takeaway shop has been serving the freshest fish and chips for forty years. The hake is line-caught daily, the chips are hand-cut, and the tartare sauce is a secret family recipe. There's no seating, no fancy decor — just a queue of locals who know.

Why It Matters: At R65 for a generous portion, it's possibly the best-value meal in Cape Town. The shop supports local fishing families and has refused multiple offers to franchise. Some things are worth keeping small.

🎉 What's On This Weekend

🍷 Constantia Fresh — Saturday, 11am-5pm, Buitenverwachting Wine Estate

The valley's best food and wine festival returns. Think local chefs, estate wines, live jazz, and mountain views. Tickets R150, includes tasting glass. Book online — this sells out.

🎨 First Thursdays — Thursday, 5pm-9pm, City Centre

Galleries stay open late, streets fill with art lovers, and the city shows its creative soul. Free entry. Start at the Castle and wander. End with dinner at one of the city's amazing restaurants.

🌅 Sunrise Hike to Lion's Head — Sunday, 5:30am, Signal Hill Drive

Yes, it's early. Yes, it's worth it. The full moon hike is magical, but any sunrise from the top will change your week. Bring water, a headlamp, and a sense of adventure.

The Ceramicist Whose Mugs Are in Every Cool Café

💼 The Ceramicist Whose Mugs Are in Every Cool Café

Sarah Chen started making pottery as therapy after a difficult year. She sold her first mug at a weekend market in Observatory. Three years later, her ceramics are in twenty-three Cape Town coffee shops, and she's just hired her first assistant.

Her studio in Woodstock Industrial is open to visitors on Friday mornings. You can watch her work, choose a piece from the seconds shelf, or commission something special. Each item is hand-thrown, glazed in her signature blues and greens, and stamped with her mark.

Why It Matters: Sarah represents a new generation of Cape Town makers — talented, authentic, and building businesses that matter. When you buy local ceramics, you're supporting an artist and getting something unique.

The Conversation Everyone's Having About Short-Term Rentals

💡 The Conversation Everyone's Having About Short-Term Rentals

Walk through any central Cape Town neighborhood and you'll spot them: keysafes on gateposts, tourists with rolling suitcases, and "Airbnb" stickers in windows. Short-term rentals have exploded here.

For some homeowners, it's been a financial lifeline. For others, it's pricing locals out of their own neighborhoods. The City is debating new regulations, and everyone has an opinion.

Why It Matters: Cape Town is trying to balance tourism income with housing affordability. Whatever your view, this conversation is shaping the future of our city.
